Here's what's happening in September....

A picture is worth a thousand words, but what if it could say more with a little tweaking? Most raw digital images these days are WAY too huge to be posted on a site such as this or even on a conventional website. Even Flickr has limits on the file size of images that can be uploaded. So what do you do? Here are a few options for editing those precious photos before sharing them with the world.

Free Photo Editing Programs

Irfanview, according to their website, is "a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista." It can be downloaded for free without the need to register and easily installs.
Picasa is another free editing program from Google, which can be found here. A video tutorial on the basic features can be watched here. The video is hosted at YouTube, so it if doesn't play, it may be blocked if you're attempting to access it from your school's computer. The program itself has a lot of features, and the best way to learn is to experiment.

Digital Cameras in the Classroom

Wondered how you could incorporate the use of digital photography into your classroom? Here is a resource list to help you out. Feel free to add your own!

Deep Web (also known as 'invisible' web)

  • What is the Deep Web? The following bullet points were taken directly taken from this source, which is a summary from this electronic publication, "The deep Web: Surfacing Hidden Value"
    • Deep Web sources store their content in searchable databases that only produce results dynamically in response to a direct request.
    • More than 200,000 deep Web sites presently exist.
    • Sixty of the largest deep Web sites collectively contain about 750 terabytes of information — sufficient by themselves to exceed the size of the surface Web forty times.
    • Total quality content of the deep Web is 1,000 to 2,000 times greater than that of the surface Web.
    >> Deep Web content is highly relevant to every information need, market, and domain.
    • If you would like a more in depth explanation, this site from UC Berkeley provides a good explanation.
  • How do I get there? Search engines exist that are specifically design to 'mine' the Deep Web. Here are a few examples. Feel free to add more.
